			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The arrival of MOOCs , especially the so-called X-MOOCs from the elite universities of the USA and the rest of the world,  has provoked conversations in traditional residential universities which simply did not take place on a broad scale before. In particular, the issues of online learning and of open content have found their way into senior academic fora, and the indabas of senior management layers of universities. Of course, neither open content nor online learning are new <em>per se</em>, but they had not reached mainstream conversations in most residential universities, let alone the elite ones.</p>
<p>Whatever else one might think of MOOCs, they are to be welcomed for making these credible and legitimate issues to discuss. However, because they have all arrived at the same time in a sense, there is some confusion about the concepts and the parameters of what each of these issues refer to. I have even heard all of them described (more than once) under the umbrella term of “open source” as in open source content, open source courses and open source learning.</p>
<p>So here is a summary of these three overlapping areas showing their similarities and distinguishing elements.</p>

<p>The Chronicle of Higher Education has published their first ebook, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rebooting-the-Academy-ebook/dp/B008OMUHRC"><em>Rebooting the Academy</em></a>, which arose from the interviews they did for a <a href="http://chronicle.com/article/Tech-Innovators/130926/">piece </a>earlier in the year on &#8220;tech innovators&#8221;. The essay I wrote on educational technology for equity was declared &#8220;too academic&#8221;, and definitely no footnotes allowed, which was an interesting exercise in genres and attribution, from my perspective! So here is the original piece, footnotes and all&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>Introduction</strong><br />
Whose interests does educational technology serve? For which ends is it pursued and which of the current trends are most relevant to advancing the equity agenda?  How can equity be kept foregrounded when universities globally, and in Africa in particular are under serious pressure? The current turmoil derives from a complex interplay of factors including the massification of tertiary systems, the impacts of information and communications technology, globalisation and the rise of the knowledge economy.<a title="" href="#_edn1">[i]</a>  Permeating the challenges in universities are issues associated with participation, throughput and successful learning.  Using the South African context as a focus, this piece considers how some current trends in educational technology can contribute to addressing these issues.</p>
<p><strong>Challenges within the system- South Africa</strong><br />
The digital divide often refers to discrepancies between countries or continents, but it is salutatory to remember (as Castells reminds) of the pressing divides within countries, within communities and even within single universities. Digital divides are of course, closely related to social divides, and South Africa is one of the most unequal societies in the world. Indeed, a 2012 report states that South Africa has the most unequal income distribution in the world, at 63.6%<a title="" href="#_edn2">[ii]</a>. The poorest 20% of the South African population accounts for 2% of consumption: the richest 20% of the population account for 66.5% of total consumption (Prabhala 2005).</p>
<p>The social divides permeate the education system where there is a serious disparity of learning achievement by socioeconomic status and geography. At grade school for example, higher reading scores are attained by pupils predominantly from the wealthiest SES (socio-economic status) quartile in urban schools<a title="" href="#_edn3">[iii]</a>. At the university level, an examination of the student age group demographics is sobering. Of the total enrolment in 2005 as a percentage of 20-24 age-group: white students comprising 60% while black students formed 40% <a title="" href="#_edn4">[iv]</a> (while in the general population, white people make up less than 10%).  The inequity of outcomes is especially sobering. Less than a third of students (30%) graduate within five years, and indeed it is estimated that under 45% of the intake will ever graduate. In most residential university programmes, black graduation rates are under half of those for whites, and there are fewer black than white graduates. The net effect is that under 5% of the 20-24 year-old black age-group are succeeding in any form of higher education<a title="" href="#_edn5">[v]</a> (Scott 2009).</p>
<p><strong>Responses</strong><br />
<em>Multipronged</em><br />
Given the extent and deep structural roots of these problems, it is clear that there are no quick fixes, and that the underlying social and economic causes of inequality, poverty and unequal development must be addressed for profound change in education to occur. Within the education system itself, multipronged responses are required across different dimensions of which technology-enabled interventions are important though they are not the cure-all they are sometimes touted to be.</p>
<p><strong>The digital</strong><br />
Having sounded these cautions, it has to be recognised that technology pervades the entire system. It is both a cause and a consequence of change in higher education as increasingly the digital infiltrates everything. This means that the foundational characteristics (the affordances) of the digital permeate the three key value points for learners in universities enabling the reshaping of:</p>
<ul>
<li>content (access to and apprenticeship to disciplinary knowledge, content creation) ;</li>
<li>interaction (between peers, between students and academic experts through pedagogy, feedback and engagement) ; and</li>
<li>accreditation (summative evaluation and certification).</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Opportunities in Current Trends</strong><br />
Which of the current digital trends are relevant, especially to students on the wrong side of the divides, and particularly those who struggle with participation and success? Three in particular are germane and intersect in ways which previously were not possible:</p>
<ul>
<li>the move to openness (in general, and in this instance to open content);</li>
<li>the growth of rich media content (especially that which is openly available); and</li>
<li>the ubiquity  of cell phones (with the concomitant possibilities for mobile learning, increased interaction, content access and content creation).</li>
</ul>
<p>Together, these create synergies with potent possibilities.</p>
<p><strong>Open &amp; media-rich content</strong><br />
The move towards openness in higher education is an opportunity for increased inclusion, and expanded access as well as better pedagogy and improved success rates.</p>
<p>At the simplest level, the availability of open (freely available, re-usable)  content is of obvious benefit to students for whom the costs of textbooks is actually and relatively too high (one South African study calculated that the cost of a year’s learning materials  was  as much as  one third of the cost of tuition<a title="" href="#_edn6">[vi]</a>). The move to making and sharing content intrinsic to Web 2.0 blurs the line between the formal and the informal, and also means that content which would not be published by commercial publishers is made easily available online, increasing the pool of suitable local case studies and local educational resources.</p>
<p>The rise of rich media is also obviously advantageous to students, for the learning process and for those at an educational disadvantage.  There is an explosion in video (user uploads to YouTube alone hit one hour per second in March 2012 , sixty hours per minute<a title="" href="#_edn7">[vii]</a>) and of this video a substantial sub-set is of educational value. There is a concomitant rise in audio and podcasting, as well as animations and interactive visualisations (e.g. representations of science “big data” and rich resources from the digital humanities).  The value of the “audio-visual” is well documented in education, creating opportunities for interactivity, modelling, improved learner engagement, and support for different types of learning “styles” and so on.</p>
<p>What is new is the prevalence and indeed the assumption of this rich media as a matter of course, as well as the fact that much of this content is freely available. The mainstreaming of open licensing is a great step forward in this regard. A recent example is laudable &#8211; the inclusion in July 2012 of Creative Commons license for YouTube uploading, which was launched with a CC library featuring 10,000 videos <a title="" href="#_edn8">[viii]</a>.</p>
<p>However, an obvious question is how those without computers or connectivity, or those without adequate bandwidth, benefit from and contribute to this abundance of online content?</p>
<p><strong>Mobiles</strong><br />
Cell phones in South Africa and beyond are a great opportunity for three reasons: ubiquity, interaction and content.</p>
<p>There are more cell phones in South Africa than there are flush toilets<a title="" href="#_edn9">[ix]</a> . Mobile cell coverage is at nearly 90%, and there were 101 mobile cell subscriptions per 100 people in South Africa in 2010, according to the World Bank<a title="" href="#_edn10">[x]</a>. Cell phones are ubiquitous across all strata of society, especially the student population<a title="" href="#_edn11">[xi]</a> where they are highly regarded, and where they are prioritised on limited, stretched student budgets.</p>
<p>Of course, relative cell phone functionality has to be taken into account. Yet even basic phones offer opportunities for interaction, communication and some content creation. A review of the many experimental projects in mobile learning notes that SMS (texting) remains key <a title="" href="#_edn12">[xii]</a> and examples of SMS cases for learning abound. These include the use of mobiles for interaction and feedback in large class interaction<a title="" href="#_edn13">[xiii]</a>, as well as SMS / web integration communication tools for questions and answers in online learning environments<a title="" href="#_edn14">[xiv]</a>.  One of the numerous successful mobile maths m-learning projects is the Dr Maths Project which uses both SMS and the web for students to interact with volunteer tutors<a title="" href="#_edn15">[xv]</a>.</p>
<p>At the same time, mobile web access is rising rapidly across the population. Even in South African rural areas, it was calculated that 27% of rural users were browsing the Internet on their phones in 2011<a title="" href="#_edn16">[xvi]</a>. Amongst the student population the proportion of cellphone users with web access is much higher. At the University of Cape Town, a 2011 investigation found that 85% of respondents to a survey reported owning smartphones. At the country’s large distance education university, with 350 000 students across Africa, 82% of online respondents and 55% of paper-based respondents reported owning a phone with Internet access. This survey concluded that the mobile phone is a key entry point for Internet adoption, narrowing both and the data gap and being increasingly used to access the Internet by all students<a title="" href="#_edn17">[xvii]</a> .</p>
<p>Obviously mobile internet enables increased access to online content. Some open resources are designed specifically to include mobile devices, with local examples being Siyavula (open content endorsed by the National Department of Basic Education<a title="" href="#_edn18">[xviii]</a>)  as well as cell phone novels, delivered in chunks (eg Yoza &#8211; <a href="http://www.yoza.mobi/">http://www.yoza.mobi/</a>). Another exciting example is the Wikipedia partnership with Orange Telecom which is waiving data fees, thus allowing its 70 million cell phone users in Africa and the Middle East free access to Wikipedia<a title="" href="#_edn19">[xix]</a>. In many other cases, research shows that students take matters into their own hands, by, for example, independently recording (and sharing their lectures), so that they can listen and repeat in their own time later<a title="" href="#_edn20">[xx]</a>.</p>
<p>Mobile-enabled content creation is becoming more common (the 2011 AMPS survey records the making of video recordings on cell phones at 22.5%) which bodes well for righting the imbalances of content online, where certain communities and countries are severely  under-represented. And from a learning perspective, these practices support the known value of “learning by doing”. Other sim-enabled devices especially tablet computers offer even more potential for content creation and access; interestingly tablets are currently the fastest ramping mobile device globally.<a title="" href="#_edn21">[xxi]</a></p>
<p>While there are relatively few tablets presently in South Africa (estimated at 325 000<a title="" href="#_edn22">[xxii]</a>), it is reasonable to assume that, as elsewhere this will increase, given the development of tablets as low in price as $35<a title="" href="#_edn23">[xxiii]</a>. Solar-powered tablets are especially relevant <a title="" href="#_edn24">[xxiv]</a>  where electricity is either lacking or intermittent, but sunshine is not. Such devices have the ability to house entire libraries of rich media for students with serious constraints accessing learning resources of any kind (lack of books is the dominant problem in schools, according to Statistics South Africa<a title="" href="#_edn25">[xxv]</a>). As open content becomes mainstream and emergent open etextbooks models (such as OpenStax, and Flat World Books) become more widely known, it becomes a realistic possibility for students to have access to extensive content at very low cost.</p>
<p><strong>Conclusion</strong><br />
At the same time, there are risks and dangers. New technologies enable closed-down practices in ways that old technologies do not &#8211; think of libraries enabling sharing of books while licensed downloads of ebooks do not. Ground-breaking developments in new devices, online environments and platforms are expensive and may only be available to those who can afford them, creating the possibility of new divides. There is a real danger that innovations in educational technology will primarily benefit those students who are already advantaged with the economic and cultural capital to exploit them and in a good position to experiment with innovation.</p>
<p>However, based on the open-web and premised on emerging digitally-mediated social practices, the key trends of openness, mobiles, and rich media coalesce to enable numerous opportunities for education.  Innovative experiments and case studies point to ways of engaging with the content and interaction at the heart of pedagogy and the curriculum. These all are cause for optimism in contexts where participation and success, and digital and social inclusions, are major imperatives.</p>

		<title>Our response to the Draft Policy Framework for the Provision of Distance Education in South African Universities</title>

We thought it especially important to respond given the positive move to openness in the document, which we heartily support.</p>
<p>This is not the official UCT response, but a response from a few of us in the OpenUCT Initiative and the Centre for Educational Technology (CET), especially myself, Cheryl Hodgkinson-Williams (special thanks) and Greg Doyle.</p>
<p>We are delighted overall by the direction of the policy, and hope that our contribution will make a difference.<strong><br />
</strong></p>
<p><strong>1.Terminology</strong><br />
While we welcome the inclusion of Open Educational Resources in the Draft Policy (p.5), we <em>recommend that a broader term, Open Content, be utilised.</em>  Materials that can be used in teaching and learning such as statistical data or research reports and/or scholarly articles, may not conventionally be thought of as teaching and learning materials or directly as “educational”. This is of particular importance at the postgraduate level where the “learning” materials are mostly primary sources and journal articles. This more encompassing term allows for other resources such as open data and open access journals to be considered as Open Content to which students and lecturers ideally will have access.</p>
<p><strong>2. Disaggregation and assessment</strong><br />
The Draft Policy explains that a great deal of investment is required for curriculum design, materials development and decentralised student support (p9). Under materials development, specific mention is made of formative assessment, but not of summative assessment. <em>We recommend that summative assessment is included as it is a critical aspect of the educational offering</em> as this final ‘judgmental assessment’ leads to students gaining credits towards a qualification or not.</p>
<p>In a digitally-mediated higher education context, increasing disaggregation means the separation of the three key aspects of teaching and learning: content, interaction (pedagogy) and credentialing (through summative assessment). Previously this were inextricably linked, now they can be gained in different ways and places, and with the rise of Open Content globally it is likely to be the quality of the pedagogy or the reputation of the credentialing institution which provides the competitive advantage rather than the content, or the whole package.</p>
<p>Thus one emerging trend places emphasis on the final assessment and credentialing of the student, rather than on how or even where (campus-based or distance education) the student completed the curriculum. Many accrediting agencies such as the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants already operate in this fashion with their “board examinations”. In a situation of online choice globally, this becomes a possible model in higher education.</p>
<p>In the past when information was a scarce commodity, universities had a role to play in both disseminating information and ensuring that students developed their knowledge. Now that there is an abundance of information from a variety of credible sources, universities may have less of a role in disseminating information and a more critical role in determining whether a student has mastered the material (using a range of sources, at a formal higher education institution or informally using Open Content).</p>
<p>We therefore disagree with the view that content provides a competitive edge, which in our view lies in the support provided by formative feedback and the attainment of accreditation criteria by summative assessment which focus more on the learning outcomes, not merely on the learning inputs.</p>
<p><strong>3. Alternative copyright mechanisms</strong><br />
The Draft Policy notes that the digitization of information has introduced challenges on how to deal with intellectual property rights and notes that these copyright regimes might become redundant (p12), but fails to mention that alternative intellectual property rights mechanisms such as Creative Commons<a title="" href="#_ftn1">[1]</a> exist to address these challenges.</p>
<p>We <em>recommend that the policy supports the use of alternative intellectual property rights mechanisms such as Creative Commons and GNU General Public Licenses</em><a title="" href="#_ftn2">[2]</a> that provide a range of licenses between the traditional copyright and the public domain. It is the development of these licensing mechanisms with full attribution to the author that has made Open Educational Resources possible</p>
<p><strong>4. Adaptation of Open Educational Resources</strong><br />
While it is heartening to note the mention of collaborative creation of Open Educational Resources in the Draft Policy (p12), creation of materials is only one step in this process. The fullest benefits of OER arise when materials are not only reused, but also revised, remixed and redistributed. Wiley defines these processes as follows:</p>
<p style="text-align: right;">○     Revise: adapt and improve the OER so it better meets your needs<br />
○     Reuse: use the original or your new version of the OER in a wide range of contexts<br />
○     Remix: combine or “mashup” the OER with other OER to produce new materials<br />
○     Redistribute: make copies and share the original OER or your new version with others (Wiley, Green &amp; Soares 2012:2).</p>
<p>We <em>recommend that the terms reused, revised, remixed and redistributed are included after the creation of OER</em> in the Policy document.</p>
<p>Furthermore we suggest that in order for all the Higher Education institutions as well as formal or informal training organisations in South Africa to benefit from the OER cycle (i.e. creation, reuse, revision, remixing, redistribution) that the Ministry of Higher Education and Training considers ways in which to reduce the duplication of effort in the OER cycle by <em>creating a government supported mechanism</em> (such as the Tertiary Education Network (TENET), <em>that can act as a ‘referatory’ to all OER created, revised and remixed by South African academics</em> and workplace trainers to optimise the redistribution of OER and break down silos between the formal and informal learning in institutions and in the workplace..</p>
<p>Notwithstanding existing institutional repositories and learning management systems, we need a mechanism to optimise the sharing and finding of OER across South Africa. This could, for example, be referred to as the South African Open Commons or OpenContent South Africa.</p>
<p><strong>5. Collaborative creation of OER</strong><br />
Although the Draft Policy document mentions the collaborative development of OER as a way to develop high quality learning resources (p14), we caution that this will need some support from institutions particularly at campus-based universities where the development of teaching materials has been under-valued in favour of research publications.</p>
<p>However, there are possible ways of optimising synergies between institutions if collaborative materials development is acknowledged as a valued academic activity and recognised in performance appraisal and promotion processes. Moreover the value of adapting OER should not be overlooked as there is a wealth of Open Content freely available online for use and adapt. The team-based approach to curriculum design and resource development is mentioned again on page 21, but the same caveat noted.</p>
<p>We welcome the suggestion that the funding framework might usefully ring-fence funding to support the collaborative development of high quality curricula and OER (p24), but strongly recommend that the funding be directed to revising, remixing and redistributing as well. This funding could be used for academics to apply for grants for collaborative OER creation, revising and/or remixing which could include the payment for necessary hardware, software, technological support, graphic design and copyright clearance services.</p>
<p><strong>6. Centralised support for distributed activities</strong><br />
We therefore suggest that other coordinating and enabling mechanisms be investigated to play a supporting role for the institutional repositories which already exist in almost all South African universities.</p>
<p>This would involve articulating protocols around norms and conventions for a community of repositories for sharing their content. The central activity  would be to support this existing and nascent community, and possibly the development of an aggregator to enable maximum exposure. It would also enable optimum sharing of materials &#8211; especially revised and remixed OER &#8211; and at the same time  allow for HEI’s to retain their original materials in their institutional repository thereby retaining their institutional branding and identity (p6) in a competitive environment</p>
<p>At the moment OER is still in its infancy in South Africa, with the University of Cape Town’s UCT OpenContent<a title="" href="#_ftn3">[3]</a> directory of a selection of materials from UCT academics, a few courses available from the University of the Western Cape<a title="" href="#_ftn4">[4]</a> and the OER Africa portal run by SAIDE for Sub-Saharan Africa<a title="" href="#_ftn5">[5]</a>.</p>
<p>If there were a central referatory for Open Content in South Africa as mentioned above, this could enable easier comparison of materials as well as afford peer reviewers and/or quality assurers the opportunity to evaluate these, as is done in the Connexions OER platform at Rice University<a title="" href="#_ftn6">[6]</a>.</p>
<p><strong>5. Distinctiveness and purpose of distance education higher education</strong><br />
We welcome the inclusion of the idea expressed in the Draft Policy that self-contained high quality learning materials be published as OER to service high-volume distance education programmes (p15), but once again note the <em>need for attention to be paid to the reuse, remixing and redistribution</em> of these materials so that they are kept current and relevant thereby avoiding the consequence of irrelevant and outdated curricula mentioned on page 24.</p>
<p><strong>6. Creating and enabling environment</strong><br />
<strong><em>6.1 Collaborative development</em></strong><br />
We strongly endorse the need for attention to be paid to the collaborative development of high quality learning resources (p.27). We recommend that as these high quality teaching and learning materials are mostly developed by academics or others receiving some form of government funding, and are therefore paid for by the public purse, they should be openly available to all. Wiley et al 2012 make the following request:</p>
<p>“Finally, all governments—national, state, county, and local—along with educational institutions must adopt a simple public policy: “Publicly funded resources are openly licensed resources.” This means that if public investment helps create an educational resource, then that content is published under an open license” (Wiley et al 2012:5).</p>
<p>We strongly support the recommendations that a review of national policies is undertaken, that ways of providing support for OER creation, revising, remixing and redistribution be sought, that alternative licensing mechanisms be investigated and that advocacy for OER be increased. To this end we recommend that the Department  of Higher Education and Training support the UNESCO Paris OER Declaration<a title="" href="#_ftn7">[7]</a> encouraging support for OER and to make educational materials developed with public funds freely available to everyone, launched at the OER Congress in Paris 20-21 June 2012.</p>
<p><strong>6.2 Infrastructure</strong><br />
We support 4.2.2 d) in the Draft policy framework which states the need for &#8220;Technological infrastructure maintenance to benefit the whole system: realizing a commitment that all post-schooling/HE students have access to appropriate ICT resources and bandwidth. An initial national project to put in place the initial infrastructure could be the basis for a separate bid to Treasury.&#8221;</p>
<p>We also recommend liaison between DHET and those activities being undertaken by the Department of Science and Technology building an infrastructure to support research activities</p>

<p>“Our education system is on the rocks”, said Mamphela Ramphele on Saturday, with this image behind her on a screen almost the size of the IMAX. “ We inherited it with a design flaw. Our government  officials quickly jumped into the control room, put a few patches on and started partying. How did you and I allow it to happen? We as citizens are complicit. We have chosen to remain silent “.</p>
<p>Her <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mNPhPPn_xU&amp;feature=player_embedded">hard-hitting speech</a> ended with a call for a revolution in education to put things right. Based on the talks given at TEDx CT Ed in the unlikely venue of Ratanga Junction, that revolution has already begun.</p>
<p>Organised entirely by volunteers, the day comprised 19 speakers, allocated slots of either six or twelve minutes each. I had wondered how a line-up of non-stop speakers could keep the attention of the 500 people who filled the two venues (the fact that there was a need for a live feed in a second venue evidence in itself of the passion Cape Townians feel about education).</p>
<p>Yet we were riveted by a carefully curated collection of talks which included the issues-based, the heart-felt, the humourous and the talented,  sometimes all at the same time.</p>
<p>It is hard to single out highlights of the day (<a href="http://tedxcapetowned.org/speakers">a full list is online</a>) but a sample of the powerful presentations included:</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQcJUpwZ_-U&amp;feature=player_embedded"><strong>Malinga Nopote</strong></a>, Principal of Sinenjongo High School in Joe Slovo Park , who described how she and her team increased the matric pass rate at Sinenjongo from 44% in 2009, to 98% in 2010, and 88% in 2011. She said that she achieved excellence through trust.</li>
<li><strong>Craig Makhosi Charnock*</strong>, Founder of UBuntu Bridge (a Xhosa and Zulu language teaching company) and self –declared  drop-out sangoma, had the audience on their feet toyi-toying after demonstrating the power of multilingualism.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqyHwD9iInA&amp;feature=player_embedded"><strong>Xola Sdiki</strong></a>, an articulate 18 year old from Hector Peterson High School, who had been through the process of becoming a GOLD peer educator and now mentor. He said he had been “a negative to other youth” but had been given the tools to help his peers, and was now, he said, “part of the dangerously contagious solution of hope”.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6R3-jWgX9TM&amp;feature=player_embedded"><strong>Christoph Hagspihl</strong>,</a> a young man who described himself as “from a private school, and the hardest I had ever worked was to get a pretty girl to come to the matric dance with me”…and who is spending a year teaching Maths before starting his job next year in a bank in a big corporate city. He believes all graduates should spend a year teaching.</li>
<li><strong>Phadiela Cooper*</strong>, Principal of COSAT (Centre of Science &amp; Technology) in Khayelitsha , one of the Western Cape’s Top Ten Schools, described with pride and modesty the successes of her students achieved against the odds, with one of her students recently achieving six distinctions in Matric.</li>
</ul>
<p>These talks were held, most appropriately, on June 16<sup>th</sup>, the anniversary of Soweto Uprising when students in the apartheid South Africa of 1976 protested against the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in schools.</p>
<p>And they were most definitely, in the spirit of TED,  ideas worth spreading.</p>

<p>I was going to call this blog posting &#8220;<em>Multilingualism, multimodal resources &amp; open education, knitting the video</em>”, but it was too long!</p>
<p>What a great idea from Creative Commons, The Open Society, The Miro Community and the US Dept of Education- a competition on why open education matters. Just three minutes long, and about an issue close to our hearts, and so familiar- why open education matters. Easy (ish) peasy (ish) we thought. We will make it both local and global, we will have funky animations and pithy interviews, we will provide interesting and authentic examples, we will have great jazzy South African music, and of course we will do it all ourselves. We know we have great creative skilled bright people, and the ideas will spark. Which they did. And of course it was much trickier than we had quite anticipated, and interviewees have their own voices and say things in their own ways (which is great except when every second counts!), and deadlines creep up, and freeze frame animations take a very very long time to draw. Yet the ideas certainly sparked, and everyone made valuable contributions…..great ideas from Glenda, Stacey’s inimitable drawings, Rulisha’s talented filming, insistence on that one more “something” from Shihaam, Stephen’s nose round the door suggesting a Xhosa opening, the idea that made that missing link from new intern Sarah on her very first day, …and Greg and Veronica pitching in even while they too were busy making a video too.</p>
<p>What did we want to say that was different from all the obvious? Yes, open ed means everyone can get resources from MIT, Yale &amp; other prestigious places,  and it can save money (although in our context it is more likely to mean that money is spent differently). These are important. And yet, there is more. Creating open resources is itself a valuable process, through the collaboration it often engenders. Creating local resources for sharing in local communities matters a  great deal. And there is an opportunity to create the kinds of resources for which commercial publishers would not consider the markets viable enough, and yet which  pedagogical and social value that can only be measured long-term not by short-term cost lines. And the investment for these lasts over time, through free re-use and easy (legal)  adaptation.</p>
